Ms. Walters Reading- The Westing Game

I gave each child a copy of our new book that we will be reading today, The Westing Game.  They seem to be very excited to read this intricate mystery.  Here are the
requirements for this book..

  • Each night your child will be required to read 3 chapters from the book.
  • Each child has a reading outline stapled in the front of their agenda.  We will add assignments to the reading outline each night.  Most nights they will just need to read the required chapters, but occasionally they will be asked to complete a sheet along with the required reading.  It is very important that they complete the required reading because we will be having a discussion each day over the reading and sometimes we will have a short quiz over what they have read.
  • Throughout the book they will also be required to fill out a suspect log.  This will be something that they will add to as they read and does not need to be turned in until we complete the novel.  The Westing Game has many characters to keep track of so this will prove helpful as we read through the book.

We had a talk today about effort.  Many of the children have been slacking on the effort that they are putting forth on assignments.  I really encouraged them to make sure they are answering questions with lots of evidence and not just taking the easy way out with one sentence answers. I also talked about taking their time and writing neatly to show that they took pride in their work.

I hope they enjoy our new novel study.  I wanted to get it read before spring break and before book beat starts.   After spring break we will be reading a biography of their choice and studying a person who has made a difference in history.
