Language Arts, Unit 1

In language arts, we spent the first few weeks of school working on building routines, clearing those summer brain "cobwebs", and reviewing the 6+1 traits of writing.  Ask your child to share with you some of the routines we've been working to establish.  This past week
we started Unit 1 of our reading series.  Each unit is three weeks long.  Below, I'm going to list the skill, metacognitive strategy, and genre we are working on in Unit 1 of our Benchmarks reading series.  I will also include the 6+1 Traits of Writing that we have been reviewing.

  • Skill:  Identify main idea, supporting ideas, and supporting details in the texts we read.
  • Metacognitive Strategy:  Ask and answer questions as we read to clarify confusing information and/or to better understand what we are reading and what the author is sharing with us.
  • Genre:  Biographies are informational text pieces that teach us about someone's life.
  • 6+1 Traits:  Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions, and the +1-- Presentation.
Homework is a minimum of 15 minutes NIGHTLY (with the exception of weekends) reading.  We visit the library EVERY MONDAY and students are given time DAILY to read and quiz on books.  They are also given short chunks of time to visit the library throughout the week as they pass quizzes and need to check out new books. They should always have a book in their bookbag to read.  Nightly reading can also be a book from home, magazine, kids online news site (Tween Tribune Jr is GREAT), Tumblebooks (username: fcsc; password: login), or any text source that is available.  Please let us know if you have any questions.  Happy READING! :)
