Throughout Unit 4, we've been focused on: summarizing,
fixing up/monitoring our understanding as we read, writing persuasive pieces, and analyzing the genre of realistic fiction. We will begin Unit 5 in our Benchmark Literacy Series after Thanksgiving break.
WORD STUDY ALERT:
We've begun a new type of word study. We will be focusing on a specific Greek or Latin root word every two weeks. Students will need to know how to define, spell, and apply the 8 words on their list. We will continue using Spelling Through Phonics to spell them. I sent home a letter and a packet to use to study. Their homework was to show you these. The packet defines the root, lists all 8 words, and defines each one very clearly for them. Students need to leave these in their yellow folders, during the two week study, so that they can use them at home and at school. They will have some time in class to work on their words, but they will need to study a few words (or more) NIGHTLY to make sure they know their words well. The test will be on DECEMBER 4th.
Our first Greek root is "METR", which comes from the Greek word metron, meaning "measure".
Our words are listed below:
meter
centimeter
thermometer
barometer
geometry
symmetry
diameter
metronome
