Common Sense Media

So many times I find that I am faced with the challenge of finding books that are appropriate for this age group.  Many of our students are ready to read books with higher lexiles, but they are not ready for the content of
those books.  How do you find out if the content of the book is appropriate for your child without reading every book?   I often rely on commonsensemedia.org.

This website does an excellent job of  rating a book for it's educational content, positive messages, positive role models, violence, and language.  It will also give you the age group for which the book is appropriate.  It also summarizes what parents need to know about this book so that you can make a good, personal judgement about the appropriateness of the book for your child.

You can even use this website to check out movies and video games. Such a valuable tool in today's world of ever changing rating standards. Check it out!
